Basher Basha:

The Bamboo Nest

The project – a library that doubles as a storm shelter - is titled ‘The Bamboo Nest’ as we envision it as being a place of nurturing and shelter for the people of these precarious mangrove islands, where they can gather for learning and exchange of ideas and also find shelter during the annual severe cyclonic storms. Addition of computers and the internet creates opportunities for digital literacy and access to resources from anywhere in the world.

Bamboo has been chosen as the primary material owing to its local availability and high tensile strength to withstand severe cyclonic wind pressures. Additionally, the structure and joinery have been designed to counter and resist the external incident forces.  As locals are familiar with bamboo construction methods, maintenance over time can be done without the intervention of labour or materials from afar.
