Bifurcation:

Re-interpreting the columns of Sagrada Familia

This workshop dwelt in deconstructing the hanging chain model structural system of Sagrada Familia(1882 – ongoing). The system uniquely has a parabolic flow force(load) and travels through the column. To sustain this force, the columns changes in cross section at regular interval. Our objective was to understand the geometry generated to support this theory with help of computational tools. We fabricated a physical model to appreciate the material and construction techniques for this complex yet efficient technique. As a future discourse, we were invited to represent this technology as a present day architectural intervention.
